Is it illegal to ask for a deposit payment? – Coastal Staircases

February 20, 2020

We have had customers express their concerns with us, as we require a 50% deposit, even suggesting it is illegal. For a registered builder, it is illegal to ask for 50% deposit as it is a big build requiring many stages, therefore stage payments are required. We are engaged by builders as an independent contractor to install the stair component of their build which falls within a particular stage, as agreed upon, and signed, in the Domestic Building Contract between the builder and their client.

A staircase is usually installed in 1 day, so the above does not apply to us. If your staircase is installed in stages then stage payments are required for final payments. You will be notified of this in your quote and sent reminders after an order is placed in your scheduling update.

Whether you have a credit account or not, a 50% deposit will be required to place your order. The deposit is required to begin the ordering process, lock in a measure and place orders for materials required to construct your order. We conduct measures weekly so don’t worry, you will not have to wait long at all. We will also confirm a day and time with you so if you choose, you can meet one of our friendly staff on site to discuss your order.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please contact Nicole in the office on (03)5248 7000.
